"FRIDAY FIVE"

(I just call it that. My “FRIDAY FIVE” could come at any point in the week.)

5 Things I Did This Weekend

1. Attended my work holiday party. Wow! The corporate world is so awesome compared to the education world. It was just so, so, SO nice! And unlike when I was a teacher we didn't have to pay to attend.

2. Attended the wedding of a friend of Zach’s from high school/college. Thankfully our last wedding for quite a while!

3. Drove around and looked at Christmas lights. There are some mega-ritzy areas in Houston and the lights are always amazing!

4. Took a night hike with Z and Maggie. Our weather is crazy warm right now so we are taking advantage of it as much as possible.

5. Ate the top tier of the new Mr. & Mrs. Kline's wedding cake. After dinner Sunday evening we were all too happy to partake of this sweet treat with them. So glad they didn’t wait a full year to eat it!

Waiting on God: My Top 5 of the Moment

It is rather difficult for me to find time to write at this point in life. Not necessarily because of time constraints in and of themselves...that is part of it....but mostly because of a lack of access to technology. I do most of my "tech checking" via my phone, but it is really inconvenient to write a blog post via a tiny keyboard. At work I'm well...I'm working! At home we only have one computer and whenever one of us decides to get on the computer it suddenly triggers the other one to desperately need to do something on it, also. Thus, I never have much time to just sit and write.

Today I am home sick with a sinus infection and upper respiratory issues. So I have been instructed not to do anything too laborious in order that I might rest and feel better for the rest of the week ahead. This means I can write and have no one else here who would suddenly "needs" the computer. :)

With that said...I am just going to write a "Top 5 List". Similar to my wonderful blogger friend's "Tuesday Ten". (Maybe I should start "Friday Five"....hmmm? Does that mean I'm an underachiever?) Anyway...so...here is my List of 5 Things We are Waiting on Answers from God On:

1) Our Home Do we move? Do we do a major remodel? A minor remodel? Refinance? If we move, where are moving to? How far from our beloved neighborhood are we will to travel in order to get the space we desire? How much do we spend? How much do we sacrifice based upon how much we are willing to spend? Will our current home continue to gain value at the same rate it has done in the past 4 years or are we nearing the leveling off point? How far is one or both of us willing to commute?

2) Zach's Career What path should he take? Where should he be looking? Who should he be contacting? How much should he expect to make? Does he switch industries or try to move up in his current industry but within another company? Should he get more schooling?

3) Jenny's Career How long should I be "just" a receptionist? What career do I really want? Do I want to teach again? Do I want to actually use my Master's directly? Will I be a working mom or a stay at home mom? What should we be doing now to position me to stay at home with kids? What should I be doing now to push ahead at my current job to take on new roles? Why am I "just" a receptionist right now?

4) Vehicles How many more months/years do our cars have in them? Which do we replace first? Is now the time to replace one or both? Truck? Car? SUV? How much are we able and willing to pay? Who will drive which type of vehicle?

5) Family When do we really, actively start trying to have kids? Do we really want to birth children? Do we really want to adopt children? Do we want to do both? In what order? How about being foster parents? If there are complications in conceiving, how much are we willing to do/pay to have them? If we adopt, what are our desires?

With all of that said...We are in a major time of waiting on God. Every single thing on this list plays a part in making a decision about one of the other things. Some more than others, but at lease one comes into play as we discuss another one on this list. It often feels like we have a row of dominoes lined up and we are just waiting for one to fall to see how the rest fall in kind.

At the start of 2012 Zach felt like the word God gave him for the year was "alignment". I felt He gave me the word "whirlwind". The year is almost over and I"m not sure I can yet see how either of those has truly come into play, but I actually still believe they were both from God. With 2 months to go we'll see how it all plays out!

Stay tuned for my "Friday Five"! Ha! :)

5 Random Thoughts

Z went to the grocery store yesterday. An act that I appreciate because it means I don’t have to trek the aisles of Kroger, but I also dread because he is a less than efficient shopper. This is true in regards to time and money. Case in point, I armed him with a list of about a dozen items. One of which was peanut butter. He returned with three different types of peanut butter. One of those types cost ten dollars! He never ceases to amaze me!

Our dog has never had a bad case of the puppy chews. She has gnawed on only a few things that are of importance but it is not a habit of hers. Unless you consider two things. The first: paper. Drop a receipt, have a paper napkin on your lap, leave a roll of toilet paper in reach and she is on it in a flash shredding it into as many pieces as she can before you snatch it away from her. The second: my panties. That’s right. In the last few months I’ve lost countless pair. You’d think I might learn not to leave them in reach but that is easier said than done. Somehow she finds each and every pair that is not neatly folded and tucked into a closed drawer. It has now reached the point of being comical but I am quickly running out. Think she will outgrow this? I sure hope so!

I am enjoying the planning of someone else's wedding far more than I did my own. It is so much easier to coach and encourage and make decisions when it isn't your own wedding. There is not the same stress, none of your own money, and you can tackle decisions with the beauty of hindsight from your own. I did not enjoy my "wedding season" for various reason. A lot had to do with the fact that I didn't care much about the wedding itself and really just wanted to be married. A lot also came from the fact that Z and I had never planned much together before our wedding and such a big event isn't the easiest place to start! If I could go back and do it again armed with my current understandings it would have been SO much different. Z would agree. Ours was nice enough and I am glad it was what it was, but I'd do it a lot different now. I am so happy and excited for Paul and Rebecca and am thrilled to be helping then plan their special day!

I have discovered Cole Haan footwear. Z has a couple of pair and has told me over and over how wonderful they are in terms of quality and comfort. Unfortunately, with that quality and comfort comes a pretty hefty price tag. Regardless, due to the fact that my current job requires professional attire but I’m also on my feet a lot, we bought me a pair. Oh my goodness! It is like wearing little clouds on my feet! Every step a dream! If ever you need some supremo outfitting for your feetsies, go for Cole!

I have never worked a 9 to 5 job before. All of my jobs in the past were either part time, with erratic work hours or had schools hours. Thus, having this current job that requires me to be at work at 8am and to leave at 5pm is really strange and even difficult for me. I still have to get home early but get home late. I’m not a big fan.  Just about the time I get home in the evening it is time to go to bed! However, we don’t go to bed at the time we should so I wake up exhausted. The weekends are far more valuable than ever. I am not meaning to complain because at least this job does not require me to take work home on the weekends, diffuse angry parents, or to be trapped in a room with thirty adolescents who want to be anywhere but in that room with me. It’s a winning situation overall but, sheesh, I need more hours in my day!

Prayers for my Former Co-Worker & Dear Friend

As we left our friends' home this evening I got onto Facebook via my mobile phone. The first post I read took my breath away. I could not believe I was reading what I was reading. In fact, I had to read it three times before the words made sense to me.One of my former co-workers from the past two years of my teaching career had posted the news of her husband's unexpected, tragic death (through an ATV accident).

I personally only met him a couple of dozen times through his visitations at school and also at our wedding, but the friendship I had forged with my co-worker allowed me to feel as if I knew him to a much greater extent. I can't explain how this news has caused my heart to ache for her and their family. Never have I so greatly longed to have the right words or actions to convey the depth of my sorrow on their behalf.

If you will, please join me in praying for my friend and her family in these days to come.

Thank you.

Too Little To Do

Life here is….interesting.

So little yet so much is going on!

I graduated from the ministry school I was participating in two weeks ago. That means I have every single day free to do everything I ever needed to do. Unfortunately, that also means I tend not to do much because I am under so little pressure that I procrastinate beyond belief! My house should be sparkling, my time with Jesus should last hours, volunteering should be on my weekly agenda, and catching up with old friends a must. Yet, instead, I’ve made it to amazingly high levels on my phone games, caught up on TV shows from the 90’s, and managed to wander around stores for hours and end up buying nothing.

So what have I really been up to?

Let’s see…

Looking for jobs, working a temp job here and there, keeping up on basic housework, throwing a bridal shower/attending bachelorette party/attending a wedding, having lunch with people because I never had time before, trying new recipes, getting a stomach virus, being Z’s chauffeur because one thing after another breaks on my car leaving us with only one, preparing for and going to Impact every Friday, hanging out with friends, spending time in prayer/the Word and also really seeking the Lord for guidance on our future, tackling the continuous task of organizing our house, participating in a Restoring the Foundations course, learning how to be a dog owner of a way too energetic, stubborn, and needy puppy, and “just” being a wife.

I will admit, it has been nice…to an extent. I am just really ready to have a routine and something “important” to do on a daily basis again. It just amazes me how I can manage to get all of those things done plus more when I’m working a full time job but when they are all I have to do I seem to never get them done! I do keep busy enough but I also know I waste time and then feel badly because Z is at work all day supporting us and I'm at home doing things like writing blogs, looking at FB, or watching my Friends DVDs.

At this moment I really need to get back to researching for Impact tonight. What will the scrumptious meal be???? What will Zach and I talk about???? What is it that the Lord would have in store for us tonight??? Probably shouldn’t have waited until 10 hours before the meeting to figure all of this out! Thankfully God is faithful even when we are slackers! Still, better not wait until the number hours until the meeting get into the single digits! :)

Bye!

Positively Positive!

I have a confession.

A confession of who I used to be.

I am was a chronic complainer.

That’s right. And don’t act surprised. The only people who read this blog are people who know me (as far as I know, at least) and I’m sure you’ve all been a victim of my negativity at some point. Myself included. Myself especially!

Over the years the Lord has convicted me of this time and again. Yet the conviction never seemed to make much of a difference over the long term. It will not be too surprising for you to hear that it has been my husband who has helped me to realize the impact of my complaining on my own attitude as well as that of others. Now, he’s never criticized me for being as I have been, per say, but when you live with someone who easily finds the good in nearly all situations or simply doesn’t fixate on the negative you start to see where you aren’t quite “there” with certain things. (Side Note: I think this is part of how we are to be Jesus to others. By us simply living a life that lines up with His will that demonstrates to others the characteristics of Christ. Thus, provoking one other to want such Christ-like characteristics.)

My desire to overcome my faulty view on life was also helped when Graham Cooke was speaking to us about a year ago. He shared something along the lines of remembering that whenever we face a trial we should look at it as an opportunity to overcome. All obstacles are really just future successes. That is something that really stuck with both me and Zach.

Also, one of the speakers at school this year, I think it may have been Doug Stringer or Julie Meyer or maybe Steve Swanson, I just can’t remember and I’m not realizing it isn’t that important! Ha! Anyway, this person was sharing how complaining could be looked at as the antithesis of praise/worship. It is giving glory to Satan and his ways. That simple thought had a HUGE impact on me.

So, how have I been working on this?

First…I pray about it. Asking the Lord to transform my thinking and to make me aware of times when I am falling into negative thinking or complaining.

Second…Whenever I realize a situation is ideal for complaining, I begin to thank God for who He is and focus my attention on praising Him rather than complaining. It is actually much easier to do when “big” things are going wrong and I have found that it is forming a habit that is now impacting the “small” things.

A testimony to go along with this:

On the way home from our vacation we had mechanical issues with my car. At first it seemed the AC was not working properly. So we went to the auto-part store to get Freon. Upon closer inspection Zach realized it was a far greater problem. At that point, we prayed and decided to keep on with our journey and just trust God that we would make it. As we drove away from the auto-part store we began to praise God and thank Him for His protection, provision, goodness, etc. Then we prayed that the Lord would even do as the Word says and turn “all things into good”. We don’t think for a second that the Lord caused our mechanical issues, but we trust that He can take what Satan intends for bad and turn it into something good for His glory.

After several hours of travel we needed to stop to eat. Zach is a fan of shopping/eating at local establishments rather than chains. To support local economy and usually it is just a more memorable experience. On this occasion we found a local barbeque restaurant and decided to stop. It was an “interesting” dining experience but we were thankful for the nourishment and hometown feel. Plus, we realized a little later it was just across the street from an auto-part store! Upon leaving Zach was checking under the engine and I was walking Miss Maggie.

While this was going on a young girl came up and wanted to pet Maggie. Soon after her mother joined us and we began to talk. It wasn’t long before they opened up about their lives. Their last puppy had died and they were looking for a new one in hopes to helping to lift the spirits of the husband/father who was suffering from deep depression after a painful injury that led to his job loss which led to severe financial issues. Along with this list of unfortunate events, many other things that would seem little to us had also been going on in their lives but, when you throw them on top of everything else, they were just continuous blows to an already beaten down family. We spent about half-an-hour talking with them, praying with them, and encouraging them.

As we left and continued our travels we once again praised God for who He is and then spent a good bit of time in prayer for this family. In the end, we thanked the Lord even for our car issues. Had we not had them we would not have been there at that time and Zach wouldn’t have been working on the car and me walking Maggie. (To that end, even the fact that we got on the road 2 hours later than I had planned played into us being where we were at that exact time.) The entire time we were talking with the woman and her daughter I couldn’t stop thinking about just that and I am still thanking God for it and praying for that little family.

I know that story isn’t anything any one of you hasn’t experienced in one form or another. It’s just the way the Lord works in our lives and allows us to work in the lives of others on His behalf. It’s awesome! Still, I wanted to share because the power of the testimony does help us to overcome in our own lives and encourages others. Plus, it was so amazing to me to see that in the midst of the Lord retraining me to be more thankful and less negative, He allowed me to have nearly immediate results in the process.

For He is good! And His mercy endures forever!

Our Trip

Zach, Maggie, and I arrived safely back home in Houston yesterday afternoon. It was a whirlwind of a week but a really good one. I hadn't seen my family in well over a year and getting to see them plus several friends was such a treat. So, despite the fact that Zach had vertigo the entire time and now we are absolutely exhausted from the 3,000+ miles of driving, we had a great time. We were especially proud of our little traveler, Maggie. She was such a good girl!

Here are some of the highlights of the trip (in chronological order):

- Getting to see all of my nieces and nephews! I LOVE those kiddos! Love, love, love them!

- We got to meet our newest nephew, Colton, for the first time. He's over a year old and this was our first meeting.

- Celebrating Easter and my birthday with my extended family.

- Having a meal of morels and Zach getting to experience them for the first time. Yuuuummmmmyyy!!!

- Hanging out with my good friend Shannon and her super adorable girls. They have grown so much and are so full of life!

- Spending the evening with my best friend of forever, Amanda, and her husband and kids. They also made it out for my birthday dinner on Thursday. Such a special time with them.

- Visiting Ohio to see Kelly & Don plus Paige & Michael and getting to meet their baby Henry for the first time. It was a longer drive then we had expected but it was so worth it. Such a blessed time.

- Visiting Evansville. It was fun showing Zach around and sharing stories about those days with him. We also had dinner and got to hang out with Karen and Tracy (Ford). It was such a pleasant and enjoyable time. Maggie also met Dasher, Karen's dog. Dasher is half the size of Maggie but totally intimidated her. It was hilarious watching them play and interact.

- Staying in Henderson with Becky, Jason, Jonas, and Samson. We got to see their beautiful new home, spend some quality time in conversation, and enjoy the nice fenced in backyard as Maggie and Samson (especially Maggie!) ran around and expended lots of doggie energy. It was such a perfect ending to the visiting portion of our trip.

- On the way home we found out that the AC compressor on my car was broken. So, not only did we not have AC all the way back to Houston but it also meant that if it totally stopped working it would have a domino affect on other vital parts of the car. (I won't go into that because I'm not mechanical enough to explain it so that anyone would actually understand.) Not having AC wasn't that bad in regards to temperature (until we got near Texas, then it was pretty miserable) but the sound that rolled down windows makes when you are going 75+ mph was a little deafening. (The upside to this story will be a post of its own soon!)

So, here we are back in Houston! Today I have the day off and am trying to catch up on school reading and papers plus getting the house back in order. I also took Zach to the doctor and found out it is a viral infection causing the dizziness but will go away on its own...hopefully sooner rather than later.

Check out FB for pictures. :)

Rounding Out My Computer Time (AKA Procrastinating BIG TIME!)

This post is about the fact that I don't have to be blogging but still felt compelled to do something on the computer because I don't want to get ready to go to school and I really don't want to have to go walk the dog. So what that really means is that I've already looked at FB 15 times and there wasn't anything there to keep my interest, read through all the silly Yahoo! news stories for the day, checked all of my email accounts 4 times, and looked to see if all of you have updated your blogs. I have no idea why I feel like such a procrastinator today. However, I had best get to going because Bob Hazlett is our speaker this week and he is A-M-A-Z-I-N-G! I don't want to miss a second of it! Well, I'm giving myself two more minutes. I like rounding everything out nicely like that. You know, like letting myself play on the computer until 8:40 (rather than get up and go at 8:38). Now I only about about 45 seconds. I guess I should finalize this and go. Hmph. I just don't wanna. Oh! It is now 8:40. I had better get off before I make myself stay until 8:45!

Have a good day all!
